The Panzerbüchse 39, abbreviated PzB 39 (German: "tank hunting rifle model 39"), was a German anti-tank rifle used in World War II. It was an improvement of the Panzerbüchse 38 (PzB 38) rifle. The PzB 39 was produced between 1938-1941, with ca 40'000 built. During the invasion of Poland, ca. 600 were equipped by German troops. At the start of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, the Wehrmacht advanced into the Soviet Union with ca. 30'000. The Germans equipped the PzB 39 until 1944, when it became clear it was only effective against lightly-armored vehicles, due to increased use of heavier and thicker armor.
